Leonard Cheshire Disability supports thousands of disabled people in the UK and works in more than 50 countries.
In the UK
Our goal is for disabled people to have access to every part of society and sphere of life; to have the freedom and opportunity to be an influential, intellectual and creative force.
In the UK disabled people are more than twice as likely to have no formal qualifications – 23% of disabled people compared to 9% of non-disabled people.
We work with young disabled people to ensure they receive the training they need to find work in an ever more competitive job market. One practical example of this is our Ability Media Centre; a fully accessible broadcast training facility where we offer courses in TV, film and radio programme production to support young disabled people to pursue careers in mainstream media.
Our work overseas
In developing countries disabled children are the poorest of the poor – 90% are denied access to education and condemned to a life of poverty and exclusion.
Our School 4 All programme is transforming disabled children’s lives by giving them the chance to go to school. We’ve been working with local partners and schools in Africa for over 10 years for example. Since this programme began, we’ve made 628 schools accessible and helped 11,727 disabled children into school.
We also lead a worldwide campaign for disabled people’s rights including our work with Young Voices. Young Voices is a global campaign network which brings together over 800 young disabled people between the ages of 16-25 in 21 countries around the world including those in Africa, Asia and the Americas. You can follow the link through to watch videos about some of their amazing stories.
